This research examined life satisfaction, depressive symptoms and perceived social support in two groups of adults (N = 120; age 40-89 years). The first was formed by stable heart failure (HF) outpatients and the second was a control group of similar age. Perceived social support was the only significant predictor of life satisfaction in the control group but, in the HF group, life satisfaction was associated with more social support and less depressive symptoms. Gender (men > women) was also an important predictor of life satisfaction in both groups, but more significantly in the HF one. All womenreported more depressive symptoms and less life satisfaction than men. Female HR patients also perceived more social support than male patients did. Finally, a partial mediation of depressive symptoms in the association between social support and life satisfaction was found in the HF group.

OTELO is an emission-line object survey carried out with the red tunable filter of the instrument OSIRIS at the GTC, whose aim is to become the deepest emission-line object survey to date. With 100% of the data of the first pointing finally obtained in June 2014, we present here some aspects of the processing of the data and the very first results of the OTELO survey. We also explain the next steps to be followed in the near future.Comment: Oral contribution presented in the XI Scientific Meeting of the Spanish Astronomical Society held on September 8-12, in Teruel, Spain (7 pages, 2 figures, 1 table). San Pedro Martir observations of microvariability in obscured quasars

Fast brightness variations are a unique tool to probe the innermost regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN). These variations are called microvariability or intra-night variability, and this phenomenon has been monitored in samples of blazars and unobscured AGNs. Detecting optical microvariations in targets hidden by the obscuring torus is a challenging task because the region responsible for the variations is hidden from our sight. However, there have been reports of fast variations in obscured Seyfert galaxies in X-rays, which rises the question whether microvariations can also be detected in obscured AGNs in the optical regime. Because the expected variations are very small and can easily be lost within the noise, the analysis requires a statistical approach. We report the use of a one-way analysis of variance, ANOVA, with which we searched for microvariability. ANOVA was successfully employed in previous studies of unobscured AGNs. As a result, we found microvariable events during three observing blocks: in two we observed the same object (Mrk 477), and in another, J0759+5050. The results on Mrk 477 confirm previous findings. However, since Mrk 477 is quite a peculiar target with hidden broad-line regions, we cannot rule out the possibility that we have serendipitously chosen a target prone to variations.Comment: Research note, 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

Documenting models and workflows: the next challenge in the field of ecological data management

Ecological models have become a key part of this scientific discipline. Most of the knowledge created by ecologists is obtained by applying analytical processes to primary data. But most of the information underlying how to create models or use analytic techniques already published in the scientific literature is not readily available to scientists. We are proposing the creation of computer tools that help to document, store and execute ecological models and scientific workflows. These tools (called model repositories) are being developed by other disciplines such as molecular biology and earth science. We are presenting a model repository (called ModeleR) that has been developed in the context of the Sierra Nevada Global Change Observatory (Granada-Almería. Spain). We believe that model repositories will foster cooperation among scientists, enhancing the creation of relevant knowledge that could be transferred to environmental managers. [EN]: Improvement of milk quality is one of the principal objectives in dairy sheep production systems. Regulator Council of PDO Manchego Cheese and National Association of Manchega Breeders take part in some milk quality research projects from Dairy Laboratory of the Regional Selection and Animal Reproduction Center, belonging to the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha, has developed. The study aims are to find the relationship between the management characteristics of the farms and the quality of bulk tank sheep milk (in differential features of composition, microbiology and technological components). Peer Reviewe

Theoretical investigation of the eight low-lying electronic states of the cis- and trans-nitric oxide dimers and its isomerization using multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2)

In this work we have carried out ab initio electronic structure calculations, CASSCF/CASPT2 and CASSCF/MRCI-SD+Q with several Pople's and correlation-consistent Dunning's basis sets, of the planar cis- and trans-NO dimers for the lowest eight electronic (singlet and triplet) states. The geometry, frequencies, dipole moment, binding energy, and vertical excitation energies are predicted with an accuracy close to or even better than the best reported ab initio previous results for some of these properties, and in very good agreement with the available experimental data. CASPT2 optimized geometries show the existence of at least four shallow NO-dimers (i.e., two cis-(NO)2 (1A1 and 3B2) and two trans-(NO)2 (1Ag and 3Au)), although CASSCF optimization with CASPT2 pointwise calculations indicate the existence of other less stable dimers, on the excited states. Vertical excitation energies were calculated for these four dimers. For the cis-NO dimer, the ordering and the energy spacings between the excited states (i.e., 1A1, 3B2, 1B2, 2nd 1A1, 1A2, 3A2, 3B1, 2nd 3B1) are very similar to those found in a recent MRCI-SD study. The singlet cis-NO dimer (1A1) is the most stable one in almost quantitative accord with the experimental data, and in disagreement with previous density functional theory studies. A nonplanar transition state for the singlet trans ↔ cis isomerization has also been fully characterized. This leads to an almost negligible energy barrier which would originate a rapid isomerization to the most stable cis-NO dimer at low temperatures, in accord with the experimental difficulties to measure the properties of the trans-NO dimer. Not only are basis set superposition error corrections necessary to evaluate accurately the binding energies, but also to determine the NN distance of these symmetrical dimers. Some problems regarding the symmetry of the wave function were found for the symmetrical NO dimers and for the NO+NO asymptote, and several approximate solutions were proposed

Mismeasure of secondary sexual traits: An example with horn growth in the Iberian ibex

    Get PDF
Monitoring programmes and studies focused on secondary sexual characters (SSCs) depend on the accuracy of measurements. However, methods of measurements of SSC, such as horns of ungulates, vary throughout the literature. Thus, the accuracy of horn growth measurements as proxies of true horn growth and the comparability of results inferred from different horn growth measurements may be questionable. We used the horns of Iberian ibex Capra pyrenaica to compare horn growth measurements and to analyse reliability with true horn growth. Our results reveal that measurements used in previous studies differed substantially from true horn growth and volume estimated as a barrel appeared as the best proxy of annular segments of horns in the Iberian ibex. Horn growth measurements are not necessarily mutually comparable, just as classical measurements are not necessarily representative of true horn growth. We discuss the wider implications of these results and suggest that biological processes linked to horns of ungulates should be reappraised using improved and accurate measurements because horn growth pattern is a key factor in sustainable management and conservation plans of ungulate species around the world. © 2012 The Authors.
